EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A local middle school conducted an ‘active threat’ exercise on Friday afternoon.
The East Providence Police Department ran the drill at Riverside Middle School on Forbes Street. The exercise was interactive between police, school officials, and students with the goal of helping students feel safe and familiar in case of an active threat.
“This is the first time that we’ve done the active threat with bringing the police in to simulate the drill. We’ve done a number of code reds and have worked with the police department to get a better understanding of what we have to do to prepare,” said school principal Steven Prew.
During the drill, students were placed in a ‘lockdown’ situation while police responded to staged threats of a shooter in the building on the second floor.
The school informed parents and members of the community about the exercise before it took place.
