PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The trial continued Thursday for a city gang member charged in the death of a 12-year-old child, as an admitted accomplice who is also the suspect’s brother, testified for almost two hours.
Luis ‘Didi’ Gonzalez, 18, admitted that he was sitting in the minivan with his brother Luis ‘Fat Boy’ Gonzalez, 23, when he heard gunshots. The older Luis Gonzalez is one of five men accused of killing Aynis Vargas at a graduation party last year.
The prosecutor questioned the younger brother about his older brother and three other defendants in the case, all of whom are in the same gang.
Luis ‘Didi’ Gonzalez was initially charged with 10 counts, including murder. As part of a partial plea deal, he pleaded guilty to four counts and the other charges were dropped. He is awaiting sentencing and faces up to 13 years behind bars.
Luis ‘Fat Boy’ Gonzalez is one of five men charged with Vargas’ murder, but he is the only one whose case made it to trial. In addition to his brother, these other three men have already pleaded guilty:
- Branden Castro, 21, pleaded guilty in April. Castro was the suspected gunman in the incident. He was sentenced to serve two consecutive life terms in prison, plus an additional 50 years.
Ricardo Vasquez, 20, admitted to police that he was driving the car involved in the shooting. He was sentenced to life in prison.
Angel Valerio, 19, pleaded guilty to three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to murder. Other charges, including murder, were dropped as part of his plea agreement. He is awaiting sentencing.
The younger Gonzalez brother will take the stand again when the trial continues on Friday morning.
