Shots fired in New Bedford hit man’s elbow

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Police were called to the area of Locust and Homer Streets Wednesday night after reports of several gunshots fired in the neighborhood.

Gunfire locator mechanisms installed in the neighborhood — ShotSpotters — also alerted police to the gunshots, about 9:20 p.m., according to Det. Capt. Steven Vicente of the Major Crimes Division.

When they got to the scene, officers found four shell casings in the area. A Volkswagen Jetta parked nearby was also hit in the windshield, though police don’t believe the vehicle had anything to do with the incident.

Then, shortly before midnight, a 20-year-old city man arrived at St. Luke’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to his right elbow.

He admitted to being in the area when he heard the shots fired, and ran from the scene to get home.

When the bleeding didn’t stop, he went to the hospital, he told police.

The man was treated and released.

Police are still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Tyrone Jones at (508) 991-6300, ext. 134.
