NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) – A Rhode Island father accused of arranging a physical fight between his teenage son and group of juveniles was arraigned on charges Tuesday.
Paul Boyd is facing a felony charge of cruelty or neglect of a child as well as a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge stemming from a fight police said took place at Vernon Park.
“The parent decided that the best thing to do was to have his son fight another juvenile and take it out in street justice,” said Det. Sgt. Frank Rosa with Newport Police.
According to police, even after Boyd’s son complained that he injured his hand, he told his son to “soldier up and start fighting again.” Police said Boyd was telling to his son to “choke him, square off, and keep fighting” during the incident.
“It is actually very sad,” said Rosa, “He is a victim of his father’s actions but he is also a criminal defendant in the fighting charge that he continued to fight with this juvenile.”
A judge ruled that Boyd cannot contact his son or any of the teens involved in the case.
