JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – Emergency crews rushed a Johnston man to the hospital after he was hit by a construction truck and dragged.
Police were called to Contillo Drive just before 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Officers on scene told Eyewitness News an AGI Construction truck was in reverse, struck the man and dragged him.
Police Dep. Chief Parillo said the victim, 81-year-old Anthony Caparco, was outside of his home talking with workers when it happened.
“It just happened so fast, it was like a second,” said eyewitness Sandy Santagata, “One minute he’s standing talking to the guy, the next minute he’s down there bleeding like crazy.”
The vehicle dragged Caparco about 125 feet and the fire department needed to extricate him. Parillo said crews took Caparco to Rhode Island Hospital where he is listed in serious condition.
While no charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon, Parillo said police were working with OSHA to determine if there were any safety violations.
He did say the backup beepers on the vehicle were working and operator error did not seem to be factor.
