PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence police have confirmed they are investigating a photo that shows a Providence police officer apparently sleeping in a marked cruiser.
Dozens of people sent the photo in to Eyewitness News via ReportIt over the last two days. The image has also been circulating over social media.
Eyewitness News checked with chief of police, Col. Hugh Clements, who said he was aware of the picture. He said it does appear to be a recent photo, but they’re following up to be sure.
The image was taken at the intersection of Broad and Early Streets.
According to Deputy Chief Thomas F. Oates, the officer was working a detail for an event. While he would not reveal the officer’s name, he did say she submitted a letter of explanation Tuesday.
Oates said he hopes the investigation will be concluded by Wednesday. As of now, police said it’s a personnel issue that’s being investigated by the department.
