PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) – The D1 and D2 State Champions will be crowned this week at McCoy Stadium.
Hendricken and La Salle are the two remaining D1 heavyweights. The match-up will prove especially interesting since La Salle was the only team to beat the two-time defending champs during the regular season.
“Both games against them were really good games earlier in the season. Obviously, the schools have a lot of history together rivalry-wise, so it should be fun,” one Hendricken player said.
The D2 match-up will feature North Smithfield and East Providence.
North Smithfield took home the State Championship back in 2008, but the top-seeded Townies have been unable to clinch a D2 baseball title thus far.
“It would mean a lot to the community,” East Providence Senior, Keith Grant explained. “They just haven’t really had anything to be excited for, for East Providence baseball, until this year.”
It will be the first time the two teams have faced each other this season.
