PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Cranston Mayor Allan Fung formally declared his candidacy for Governor of Rhode Island Monday morning, filing and signing the paperwork at the State Board of Elections office that’s required to make it onto the ballot.
Once finished with the official documentation, Fung talked to reporters, saying he wanted to “make sure that the voters of Rhode Island know that I’m serious about this, and I want to turn this state around.”
The window for filing candidacy paperwork ends on Wednesday.
Fung or challenger Ken Block is expected to take on the winner of the Democratic primary between state Treasurer Gina Raimondo, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, Clay Pell and Todd Giroux.
Democratic incumbent, Gov. Lincoln Chafee, is not seeking reelection after one term in office.
