Man agrees to plead guilty in Amber Alert case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A man who took a 13-year-old girl from Rhode Island to his home in New Jersey after meeting her online has agreed to plead guilty.

Daniel Berger signed a deal this month with federal prosecutors to plead guilty to a charge of travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.

Prosecutors agreed to recommend a sentence of seven years, three months in prison.

Authorities say Berger, of Haskell, New Jersey, befriended the girl online and traveled to her home in Portsmouth on July 24, 2013, before driving her to New Jersey. Her disappearance prompted an Amber Alert.

The following day, the girl was found in Berger’s home. He was arrested and has been held since.

His lawyer said soon after the arrest that there were serious mental health issues in the case.
