NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) – Residents in New Bedford have a new way of getting rid of trash.
The city switched to a new automated solid waste collection and curbside recycling program Monday.
The collection truck uses a robotic arm that lifts a specialized container and dumps trash and recycling into the compactor bin. The system requires uniform carts with wheels. More than 49,000 carts have already been distributed.
The new program is expected to help streets stay cleaner, increase recycling and benefit the environment. Officials say it will also cost less for taxpayers.
