PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — City officials have repaired the pool at the Davey Lopes Recreation Center and say it will open on time this season.
The Providence Journal reports the city believes its summer free-lunch program and a day camp at the center will draw children to the pool.
Mayor Angel Taveras had closed the pool last summer citing poor attendance and structural problems. Area residents and lawmakers began a campaign to save the facility. The city eventually agreed to spend almost $93,000 to fix the pool.
The work began the week of May 18. The pool is scheduled to reopen on June 30.
