NEWPORT, R.I. (AP/WPRI) — Newport police are investigating a burglary at Gooseberry Beach.

Lt. Fitzgerald confirmed to Eyewitness News that someone broke into the beach’s clubhouse over the weekend and cut a safe from a wall in the manager’s office.

The burglars got away with close to $7,800 in cash and checks.

Police say two filing cabinets also were damaged.

They say the burglars apparently used a screwdriver to pry open the back door of the office sometime between 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturday.
