COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — A Coventry home was damaged after a tree came crashing down on it during Friday’s storm, but fortunately no one was hurt.
The residents of 210 Shippee Plat Road said they were swimming in Johnson’s Pond when they first heard thunder. They ran for cover, and minutes later – a lightning bolt struck a massive tree in their backyard.
“It looks like it struck right in the middle of the tree and the whole thing exploded and the brunt of the weight landed on top of the house,” said homeowner Ron Mattias.
“Everybody that was in the living room jumped, scared, screamed,” Mattias said. “We were wondering if it was coming through the house.”
The tree punched two holes in the roof and crushed the home’s vinyl siding.
Police and firefighters quickly responded to the home to assist the residents.
Mattias said the tree narrowly missed his grill, so he’ll still be able to hold a cookout this Fourth of July weekend.
