Trial date set in Prov. developer corruption case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A prominent developer accused of bribing North Providence councilmen will go on trial in October.

The Providence Journal reports that lawyers and prosecutors in the case of Richard P. Baccari, chief executive officer of Churchill & Banks, agreed to a trial date of Oct. 8.

Baccari is accused of paying a $50,000 bribe to councilmen in exchange for favorable votes for a rezoning of land. At the time of the tainted 2009 vote, officials believed the rezoning would pave the way for a supermarket project. The market was never built.

Three councilmen were convicted and imprisoned in 2011 after they admitted to extorting bribes from Baccari and the developer of an unrelated housing project.
