STONEHAM, Mass. (WPRI) – Firefighters put out a small blaze inside of a second floor apartment in Stoneham and realized the contents was unlike any they had encountered before.

According to Stoneham police, firefighters responded to a Hersam Street apartment shortly before 7 a.m. on June 11 and quickly extinguished the flames. Investigators later found a complex marijuana grow operation inside which included heat lamps, an irrigation system, and more than 400 marijuana plants.

Police obtained a search warrant and found ledgers, drug transactions, a vacuum sealer machine, and plastic bags for sealing marijuana, police said. There were also several jars of marijuana buds in the apartment and inside the refrigerator.

About one month later, a repeat drug offender turned himself into Woburn District Court in connection to the marijuana grow operation. Jason D’Anna Jr., 35, of Barrington, was charged with possession and intent to distribute.

Police believe that D’Anna was a tenant but did not live in the Stoneham apartment that is owned by one of his relatives.

He is set to be arraigned on July 18.
