NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — New Bedford Public Schools released the results of a first-of-its-kind community survey Tuesday, identifying both concerns and bright spots within the district.
Among the key findings, 57% of the nearly 900 parents, students, teachers, and community members surveyed rated New Bedford’s overall quality of education as fair or poor. 34% called it good, and only 7% rated the school system as excellent.
On a brighter note, 71% supported the district’s plans for improvement, 72% agreed that the district is focused on student achievement, and 84% of parents reported feeling welcome in their child’s school.
But the survey also raised concerns about community engagement. 67% disagreed that community input is sought before decisions are made, and 66% disagreed that the district shares relevant facts with the community before making decisions.
Complete survey results were posted on the New Bedford Schools website.
