WESTPORT, Mass. (WPRI) — A Westport woman was sentenced to three years behind bars for hitting a man with her car while drunk – ultimately causing his death.
Hazel Teague White, 48, accepted a plea deal Tuesday on a felony charge of motor vehicle homicide while driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.
Westport Police Detective Antonio Cestodio said White and 67-year-old John Monsam were returning from Twin River on April 23, 2012, when Monsam got out of the car on Old Bedford Road. White’s car then struck the man and knocked him to the ground.
Monsam later died from a head injury at Rhode Island Hospital, according to Cestodio, who also said the two had been arguing prior to the victim being struck.
White will serve her sentence in state prison rather than county since her term is longer than two years.
