WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) – A worker at a sewage treatment plant in Westerly was was hospitalized after lightning struck the facility early Wednesday morning, town emergency officials confirmed.
Beth Gingerella, the chief of the Westerly Ambulance Corps., said lightning struck the sewage plant around 8:15 a.m. and that the worker was taken to Westerly Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Gingerella said the worker was holding a metal door when the lightning struck, meaning the bolt did not strike him directly. The worker said he felt a “tingling sensation” in his body after the strike.
He is expected to be released from the hospital within the day.
