Protestors gather calling for peace in Gaza

Several protest groups took to the streets of Providence Saturday to protest the violence devastating the Gaza Strip.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — While airstrikes continue to devastate the Gaza Strip, Rhode Islanders gathered Saturday calling for the violence to stop.

Brown Students for Justice in Palestine and other local organizations gathered on Washington Street between Kennedy Plaza and Burnside park. They want Israel to face sanctions and punishment until it stops its campaign of airstrikes and occupation.

“We just want as many people in Rhode Island to see that Palestinian people are here,” said Sophie Soloway, of the Brown Students for Justice in Palestine. “There’s a lot of support for them in this community, and this part of expressing community and support is really important.”

The group has also gathered signatures on a petition calling for Rhode Island senators and congressmen to speak out against the siege.

Officials in Gaza say Israel’s 12 day offensive against Hamas militants has left at least 342 Palestinians dead.
