Officer struck by van while on bike patrol

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence police officer is recovering after he was struck by a van while on bike patrol Monday night.

According to city police, Officer Kensuke Matsumoto was hit near the intersection of Westminster and Exchange Streets at about 9:20 p.m.

The officer was not seriously injured, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Police said the driver, 59-year-old Warren Turner, was charged with having an expired license, no registration, and no proof of insurance – but was not issued any traffic violations.

It remains unclear how the collision occurred.
