PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Two suspects accused in a brutal home invasion that eventually turned into a murder case were arraigned Wednesday.
Joel Valdez, 26, and Wilbert Richardson, 40, appeared in Providence Superior Court to be arraigned on several charges, including murder.
According to police, Valdez and Richardson broke into an Ontario Street apartment unit last October and attacked the apartment’s landlord, Dean Cabral. Police say Cabral was beaten unconscious and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He died weeks later.
Valdez and Richardson were initially charged with felony assault, but those charges were upgraded to murder after Cabral’s death. The two men were arraigned on murder charges in Providence District Court back in January.
Earlier this month, Valdez and Richardson were each indicted by a grand jury on long lists of charges. Those charges include: murder, breaking and entering, conspiracy to commit breaking and entering and first-degree robbery.
Both suspects are from Providence.
