TIVERTON, R.I. (WPRI)- A large crowd gathered at Sandywoods Center for the Arts in Tiverton Wednesday night to support a local firefighter and his charity.
Braden Leonard, 32, contracted a necrotizing bacteria in his right hand following a freak mountain biking accident in early June. Doctors were forced to amputate his hand to save his life.
Leonard founded the charity “Team Braden Strong” to help others who suffer serious injuries.
“I’d just like to thank everyone from the staff at Rhode Island Hospital to all my brothers at Local 1950, Newport Bicycle, Team 1 Newport, everyone that’s supported me and helped me get back to being me,” said Leonard.
Leonard says he has no plans of retiring from the fire department. Instead, he plans to find the right prosthetic that will allow him to continue his rigorous job.
