No West Nile in latest RI mosquito tests

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — State environmental officials say tests on Rhode Island mosquitoes are still showing no sign of West Nile virus.

The Department of Environmental Management said Tuesday that results from 186 mosquito samples from 36 traps set around the state during the week of July 21 came back negative for both West Nile and eastern equine encephalitis.

Results from another 147 samples collected from traps set last week are pending at the Department of Health.

Neither disease has been isolated in mosquitoes in Rhode Island yet this year, though West Nile and EEE have both been found in Massachusetts. West Nile has been found in Connecticut.

Residents are urged to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, including standing water, and protect against bites.
