WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — A man accused of assaulting his girlfriend was arrested in Woonsocket Tuesday following a nearly two-hour standoff with police.
According to Woonsocket Police Det. Sgt. Matthew Ryan, the victim told police the man held her captive and beat her over a two-week period.
Officers responded to the High Street home just after 9 a.m. to make an arrest, but the man refused to open the door. Police soon learned there were weapons in the home and that the suspect’s two kids were there, along with his girlfriend.
The street was blocked off as about 25-30 police officers and firemen worked to diffuse the situation. A special response team was also called to the scene.
A hostage negotiator was able to talk the suspect into giving up after almost two hours, Det. Ryan said.
The extent of the victim’s injuries or her current condition are not known at this time. No injuries were reported during Tuesday’s standoff.
Police said they’ve had prior dealings with the suspect, but could not yet identify him. A no-contact order was issued between him and the victim.
There are several charges pending against the suspect, and he’s expected in court Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
