Man charged in Woonsocket police standoff

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — A man who was arrested following a police standoff in Woonsocket Tuesday has been charged with domestic assault and kidnapping.

Ahkiem Nelson, 33, is accused of holding his girlfriend hostage and repeatedly beating her over a two-week period.

According to Woonsocket Police Det. Sgt. Matthew Ryan, officers responded to Nelson’s High Street home just after 9 a.m. to make an arrest, but the police said Nelson refused to open the door. Police soon learned there were weapons in the home and that the suspect’s two kids were there, along with his girlfriend.

The street was blocked off as about 25-30 police officers and firemen worked to diffuse the situation. A special response team was also called to the scene.

A hostage negotiator was able to talk the suspect into giving up after almost two hours, Det. Ryan said.

The extent of the victim’s injuries or her current condition are not known at this time. No injuries were reported during Tuesday’s standoff.
