Former councilwoman arrested, charged with breaking and entering

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – A former local lawmaker was arrested Thursday night and charged with felony breaking and entering, according to the Johnston Police Dept.

Melanie Turner, 51, a former member of the Johnston Town Council, is accused of breaking into her friend’s home and stealing $1,800 in cash. The alleged break-in took place August 2.

Police said the alleged victim identified Turner as the suspect.

Turner was arrested Thursday, and police said they recovered $750 of the allegedly stolen cash.

Turner was arraigned Thursday night. She is due back in Providence Superior Court Oct. 9.
