Magic, Smokey among stars at Osborne Softball Classic

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Dozens of athletes, movie stars, and musicians stepped up to the plate Sunday to participate in the Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity All-Star Softball Classic.

The East Team edged past the West Team 18-16 at McCoy Stadium, but more important than the game itself was the money raised. All ticket proceeds benefited the Jeffrey Osborne Foundation and the Pawtucket Red Sox Charitable Trust.

Jeffrey Osborne, a Grammy-nominated R& B musician, singer-songwriter, and lyricist, was born and raised in Providence. He became close friends with Magic Johnson during the Lakers’ glory days when Jeffrey was often a “good luck charm” as the national anthem singer before Lakers’ games at the Forum and later at the Staples Center.

Next up, the celebrities will move from the diamond to the links for the Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Golf Classsic Monday and Tuesday.

WPRI 12 is proud to be the lead media sponsor of the Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Classic.
