PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A three year old girl died after falling from a sixth story window in a Providence building Friday evening.

The Providence Fire Department tells Eyewitness News the child fell from the Hillcrest Village Apartments on Leander Street, and added the child was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital shortly after 6:20 p.m.

According to a police report obtained by Eyewitness News the girl’s father, mother, and grandmother were all home at the time. The girl’s mother says she saw the toddler by the window, and told her to stay away from it. However, she ignored her mother’s instructions. The girl’s mother says she turned to the kitchen for just a moment, and turned back in time to see her daughter plunge through the screen.

“Everybody heard a thump that fell from the window, and they thought it was an air conditioner, but it was a body,” one witness said. “I’m all shooken up from it, because I got grandchildren.”
