WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — An innovative bridge replacement project is creating temporary traffic changes in the Warwick area.

On Monday, the following ramps and exits were closed to make way for the replacement of the Barton Corner Bridge:

  • I-95 South Exit 8 to Route 2 North (Ramp still open for access to Route 2 South)
  • On-ramp from Route 2 North to I-95 South (Drivers can access I-95 South via the Route 2 South on-ramp)

Those ramps will remain closed for the duration of the 11-day project.

On Tuesday night, Route 2 North and South will be closed to traffic from Division Street in East Greenwich to just south of the James P. Murphy Industrial Highway in West Warwick, to allow for demolition of the existing Barton Corner Bridge.

That stretch of Route 2 will reopen in time for the Wednesday morning commute.  It will be closed to traffic once again on Friday from Noon through the afternoon commute.

Two halves of the new Barton Corner Bridge are being constructed nearby, and will eventually be moved into place using self-propelled modular transporters similar to ones used in the Iway bridge replacement project.
