Employee of special needs school fired after child porn arrest

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WPRI) — A Cumberland man was fired from his job at a Massachusetts school for special needs students after he was arrested Friday on child pornography charges.

Eric S. Bean, 32, of Mendon Road, was taken into custody by members of the Rhode Island Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force on charges on possession of child pornography and transfer of child pornography.

Bean worked in the IT department at the Judge Rotenberg Education Center in Canton, which provides education and treatment to students with developmental and behavioral problems.

According to Rhode Island State Police, the investigation stemmed out of Nebraska, where state police there discovered the transference of child porn images from an email account that was later traced to Bean’s Cumberland home.

Task force members executed a search warrant at the home Friday and seized digital media.

Police said there’s no evidence the suspect came into contact with any children at the school, but the investigation is ongoing.

The school released a statement following Bean’s arrest, saying “The Center terminated an employee in our IT Department, Eric Bean, immediately after being notified by the Rhode Island State Police that he was arrested today for possession of child pornography at his home. Mr. Bean held a technical position and had no unsupervised contact with our clients. The allegations against Mr. Bean are unrelated to his work at the Center.”

Bean is expected to be arraigned Friday in Providence District Court. A person found guilty of possession of child pornography may be sentenced to no more than five years in prison or fined no more than $5,000, or both, according to police, and a person found guilty of transfer of child pornography may be sentenced to no more than 15 years in prison or fined no more than $5,000, or both.
