This morning on The Rhode Show we got the scoop on this Saturday night’s big WaterFire event happening in Providence from Bronwyn Dannenfelser and talented local singer, Tony Cerbo, who will be performing that same night.
Here is a full listing of the fun events taking place:
Ignite Providence Music Stage
The Ignite Providence Music Stage at WaterFire, sponsored by Geico| Local Office and Fat Belly’s Irish Pub is located on Steeple Street and will be in full swing on August 23rd from 7 PM through 11:30 PM. Joining us is local favorite Tony Cerbo. Guests are invited to join us to dance and enjoy some classic songs as one of the Rhode Island greats brings Rat Pack style music back to Providence. Mixed Magic Exult Choir, traditional gospel with a contemporary twist, will also be performing for a short set. Started in 2006 this group works to honor and preserve America’s great gospel music tradition and to build a more literate and arts-active community through their work.
WaterFire Honors Teach for America Rhode Island
WaterFire is proud to welcome back Teach for America and teachers that bring change to our community and to the lives of Rhode Island Students. To recognize the 35 incredible individuals that have committed to working with low-income students in the Rhode Island community, a special torch procession will be held starting at Memorial Park at 7:38pm and Making its way to Waterplace Basin for the lighting of WaterFire.
Clear Currents Light Up the River
WaterFire’s August 23rd lighting will have a very special Clear Currents WaterFire Event. Starting at sunset, volunteer canoeists and kayakers with illuminated Japanese koi fish mounted to their vessels will paddle up and down the river in schools beautifully complimenting the burning braziers. WaterFire is excited to have so many different community members joining us as part of this effort to bring awareness to the health and cleanliness of one of WaterFire and Providence’s greatest resources: Water! There are still paddling opportunities available: sign up for this great event today.
Capoeira Performances on the Basin Stage
Grupo Ondas, a local Capoeira group, will be performing on the Basin Stage before and during lighting from 6-8PM. This Afro-Brazillian martial art combines fighting, dancing, acrobatics and music that is as breath-taking to watch as it is to play. Grupo Ondas students will be performing in a traditional Batizado, or belting ceremony, as they work to improve their skills in this fascinating form of martial arts.
Arts Festival Plaza
Arts Festival Plaza Located on Washington Street, the Arts Festival Plaza features local arts and craftspeople and will open at 6:00 PM. The evening will showcase paintings, sculptures, photography, hand-crafted ceramics and jewelry created by members of the Providence community.
