Rare animal spotted in Smithfield backyard

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — A  bobcat sighting in a Smithfield resident’s backyard was caught on camera Sunday near the Stillwater Reservoir.

According to the Department of Environmental Management (DEM), bobcat sightings in Rhode Island are very rare.

Research suggests their populations in the region have been increasing in recent years, based on the number of sightings by people, trail cameras, and road-side kills.

The DEM says bobcats don’t pose a threat to people, because they prey on small mammals and tend to be shy and secretive.
