NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — The son of Newport Mayor Harry Winthrop was arrested this week on felony charges of breaking and entering and assault.
Christian W. Winthrop, 42, appeared Monday before a Second District Court judge after being taken into custody by Newport police. Winthrop was charged with domestic breaking and entering, and simple assault, both felonies.
According to Newport Police Sgt. Jonathan Cortes, Winthrop’s girlfriend called police at about 1:15 a.m. Monday saying he got into her apartment by climbing through a kitchen window after cutting the screen. The woman said he then picked up a drink and threw it at her, though she was unharmed.
He was released on personal recognizance and referred to felony screening. A Second District Court judge also issued a no-contact order between Winthrop and the victim.
Mayor Harry Winthrop confirmed his son was arrested, and said this is a family matter and that his son is dealing with it.
