NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Two suspects are now facing charges in the murder of a New Bedford man in July, and prosecutors believe the stabbing may have stemmed from a robbery attempt.
Marco Shane Ramos, 26, of New Bedford, was indicted by a grand jury in the murder of 22-year-old Alex Silva.
On the night of July 31, Silva was stabbed on Rodney French Boulevard. He later walked into New Bedford police’s South End Station with a stab wound and was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital. From there he was flown to Rhode Island Hospital, where he died.
Also indicted was Amarylis Valera, 21, on counts of unarmed robbery and accessory to murder, after the fact.
Prosecutors have been mum on details, but they said there appears to be a robbery element to the violent incident. They also revealed that Ramos and Valera were not well known to the victim.
Silva cut hair at Silveira’s Barbershop, where he is fondly remembered by friends and co-workers.
Ramos pleaded not guilty to upgraded charges in early August.
Both suspects were ordered held without bail until their arraignments, dates for which have not yet been set.
