MEMA launches new alerts app

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (WPRI) — The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is announcing a new option for residents with smartphones or tablet computers who want to get public safety alerts. In conjunction with the alert app service Ping4Alerts, MEMA now offers Massachusetts Alerts, dubbed the ‘next generation’ of the free alerting app.

The upgrade is customized for Massachusetts, and provides emergency notifications received over cell phone networks or wi-fi. The app’s upgrade now offers preparedness tips and information in addition to alerts and info about ongoing incidents, disasters or missing persons.

Real-time information that comes over the app includes Amber Alerts and Silver Alerts — for missing or endangered children and older residents, respectively — shelter information, and severe weather watches and warnings.

The alert app is available for both Apple iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

The Ping4Alerts app has supported Massachusetts for the past two years.
