Suspects arrested in Westport art theft

WESTPORT, Mass. (WPRI) — A pair of Massachusetts men are facing charges after $15,000 worth of art was stolen from a Westport Restaurant.

Tyler Arruda, 22, of Somerset, and Matthew Cordeiro, 22, of Fall River, are accused of breaking into Marguerite’s Restaurant on Main Road August 15 and taking 11 “Sailors Valentines.”

Arruda and Cordeiro are charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny over $250, and malicious damage to property.

The investigation into the crime led police to a home on Old County Road, where officers unsuspectingly came across drugs and ammunition for various rifles. The couple that lives there was taken into custody as a result, but their connection to Arruda and Cordeiro is not yet clear.

Despite the arrests, police have not yet recovered the stolen art and are now reaching out to the public for help. Investigators believe the pieces may have been sold or given to unsuspecting people.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Westport Police Detectives at (508) 636-1122. Some of the Sailors Valentines are pictured below.
