NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A suspected armed robber was arrested early Friday, moments after police say he was scared off by a bat-wielding convenience store owner.
According to New Bedford Police, 50-year-old Edward Tuffo walked into the 7-Eleven on Coggeshall Street in New Bedford shortly after midnight Friday, approaching a female clerk at knifepoint, and demanded cash.
At that point the store owner pulled out a small baseball bat, causing the would-be robber to run off empty-handed.
Police arrested Tuffo at the intersection of Coggeshall Street and Bellevue Avenue moments later.
Tuffo is charged with one count of attempted armed robbery.
