NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) – A home was heavily damaged by fire Saturday morning, and firefighters say it was caused by a cigarette.
The fire was reported at 4:55 a.m. at a single-family home at 230 Hatchery Road.
Fire officials told Eyewitness News that the second floor of the home was burning when they arrived, but that the two occupants were able to get out safely. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries fighting the fire.
Deputy Chief Robert Giglietti said that one of the occupants had been smoking in bed, which investigators confirmed as the cause of the fire.
The town building inspector condemned the home because of the extensive damage.
