Children treated for respiratory virus in Hartford

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Officials at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford say they’re treating children with symptoms similar to those of a serious respiratory illness suspected of sickening dozens of boys and girls in at least 12 other states.

Medical center spokesman Bob Fraleigh says the children have symptoms similar to those of enterovirus 68, but doctors are awaiting test results from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He says no cases of the virus have been confirmed.

Fraleigh wouldn’t say how many children are being treated at the medical center.

Enterovirus 68 is an uncommon strain of a very common family of viruses that typically hit from summer through autumn. It can cause mild cold-like symptoms, but it can also lead to serious breathing problems, especially for children with asthma.
