SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — The University of Rhode Island has a new guide of native plants that’s designed to help homeowners, landscapers and others make the best picks for their landscapes.
The online Rhode Island Native Plant Guide is a three-year project of URI’s Outreach Center and the Rhode Island Natural History Survey. It includes 400 of the more than 1,300 plants that are native to Rhode Island.
Users can search by plant name, type, sun or shade tolerance and soil conditions. The guide includes information about the food or medicinal value of the plants to people and their value to wildlife. It also says where the plants can be purchased.
The guide can be found on the URI plant guide website.
Funding came from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s education and research program.
