“Whitey” documentary debuts on TV Thursday

(WPRI) — A documentary looking back at the 2013 trial of notorious Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger is set to make its television debut on CNN Thursday night.

“Whitey: The United States of America v. James J. Bulger,” directed by Joe Berlinger, was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival, and had a limited run in U.S. theaters in June.

Bulger eluded police for nearly sixteen years before his arrest in 2011. He’s currently serving two life sentences for racketeering and his involvement in eleven murders. The documentary details Bulger’s crimes, capture and conviction.

The voice of Bulger himself also appears in the film, in his first-ever media interview.

The film premieres on CNN at 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, but will also be available to view online.

“Black Mass,” a biopic about Bulger’s life, with Johnny Depp starring as Bulger, is set to be released next year.
