PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A union that represents staffers at the Providence Journal held an information picket Thursday outside the newspaper’s offices on Fountain Street.
The Providence Newspaper Guild said it was protesting the recent layoffs of 22 of its members, and the plans to possibly lay off more.
The job cuts happened after the paper was sold to GateHouse Media earlier this year.

When asked to comment on the protest, Providence Journal interim publisher Bernie Szachara said “We’ll choose to respect the bargaining process and defer to conveying our issues there as much as possible.”
The group said the protest was part of a continued effort to show GateHouse their strength, unity, and concerns.
