PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Authorities say a family of four from Quincy, Mass. is alive following an accident because of seat belts.
The driver had fallen asleep on I-95 South in Pawtucket Wednesday night when his vehicle hit two light poles, went up an embankment, and rolled over.
When Rhode Island State Police troopers arrived, they noticed that all four family members were wearing seat belts and the youngest child was secured in a child safety seat.
The family was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.
“On a day-to-day basis, the use of seat belts saves lives,” said RI State Police Superintendent Col. Steven O’Donnell. “This accident magnifies why law enforcement, the governor, the DOT, traffic safety groups, NHTSA and legislative leaders worked hard together in passing a primary seat belt law. Clearly, this family avoided tragedy last evening by buckling up.”
A second vehicle was also involved in the accident. Police said the driver was also wearing her seat belt and was not seriously hurt.
