South Kingstown’s Murphy traded to Celtics

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — South Kingstown basketball star Erik Murphy is joining his hometown team.

As Eyewitness Sports first broke on Twitter, Murphy was traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Boston Celtics. Murphy, Dwight Powell and Malcolm Thomas are headed to the Celtics in return for Boston guard Keith Bogans and two future conditional second round picks.

In a text message Thursday night, Murphy told Eyewitness Sports “It’s an amazing feeling. I grew up a C’s fan and it’s been a lifelong dream and it’s just an unbelievable experience.”

Murphy had a whirlwind first year in the NBA. After being selected in the second round of the 2013 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls out of the University of Florida, Murphy has had brief stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Utah Jazz.

Murphy said he expects to join the Celtics in the coming days.
