JOHNSTON, R.I. (AP) — A preliminary plan calls for Rhode Island households to pay an estimated $10 a month in a “pay-as-you-throw” bag fee to dispose of trash at the state’s Central Landfill.
The Providence Journal reports that the bag fee would replace the current $32-a-ton paid by towns and cities to toss residential trash at the landfill.
The plan says the new fee system would pay for landfill and recycling operations and programs, with surplus returned to towns and cities to help finance their trash-collection operations.
The proposal before the state Planning Council may be changed by the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corp. and public comment.
Michael J. OConnell, executive director of Resource Recovery, says the agency will not be able to pay for operations in 2018 without changing how it’s financed.
