Retired Providence firefighter asking judge to reinstate his pension

John Sauro (WPRI 12)

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WPRI) – A retired Providence firefighter who is suing the city has asked a judge to reinstate his pension.

John Sauro’s pension was suspended in December after the Providence Retirement Board ruled he refused to see a Massachusetts doctor to reexamine an injury.

Sauro was collecting a $3,900 monthly tax-free accidental disability pension for a shoulder injury he said he got while working as a firefighter. He retired in 2000.

He was seen in Target 12 undercover video from 2011 conducting strenuous workouts and weightlifting over several days at a local gym.

Sauro has claimed he was too sick to travel to see a doctor, but according to court documents the city hired a private investigator that took video of him running errands.

A judge is now reviewing Sauro’s request for a preliminary injunction to have his pension reinstated. He is suing the city claiming he has been harassed and retaliated upon.
