CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — State Representative Joseph McNamara is the new chairman of the Rhode Island Democratic Party.
The Democratic State Committee elected McNamara at a meeting Thursday night. McNamara was expected to land the position, after he was endorsed by House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello.
McNamara replaces Rep. Grace Diaz, who has been serving as acting party chair since David Caprio stepped down in July. The ethics commission is investigating whether Caprio violated ethics rules by bidding on a state beach concessions contract.
McNamara was first elected to represent Warwick in 1994 and has served more than a decade as chairman of the House Health, Education and Welfare Committee. He’s a retired Pawtucket school administrator.
