Shots fired in attempted Providence carjacking

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Providence police are investigating after a man attempted to carjack a couple at gunpoint late Saturday night.

It happened on Portland Avenue at about 9:45. A 29 year-old man and his 37 year-old girlfriend were sitting in their vehicle when a man approached from the direction of Pine Street and motioned for the driver to roll down his window.

The driver didn’t open the window, so the man made the same motion again, at which point the couple decided to drive away.

As they drove away, the man fired three to five rounds at their vehicle. Neither the driver nor his girlfriend were hurt and called police after they got away.

The suspect was described as a tall and very thin black man who was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. He reportedly fled towards Broad Street after the encounter.

Detectives are still investigating.
