PROVIDENCE (WPRI) – Thousands of people attended the annual Columbus Day parade.
Eyewitness News anchors Mike Montecalvo, Shannon Hegy, Jared Pliner and Kelly Sullivan could be seen walking in the parade, along with Rhode Show hosts Michaela Johnson, Will Gilbert and Brendan Kirby.
Among the crowd, were the wives of the Colonial Navy of Massachusetts Fife and Drum Corps from Fall River, some of them have been cheering from the sidewalk for 48 years. Ann Hart’s husband marched in the parade, she says “Most of the wives are here all the time. We bring the food with us and the grog is waiting for them at the end of the parade.”
Parade goers enjoyed entertainment, good company and lots of food. It’s a tradition that that one Charlestown family enjoys every year. Erin Bacon says, “We come with empty bellies and eat some Italian food … and it’s a nice day to be out in Providence.” Her daughter, Katelyn Jeffrey, shared the same enthusiasm, saying “We’re excited to see the parade and walk around and do the carnival stuff and get some food to eat.”
The parade starred an array of guests, from police officers and fire fighters to marching bands. Young and old, the Columbus Day parade is a few hours to enjoy the company of others. The parade is just part of the Columbus Day weekend festival on Federal Hill, which will continue Monday.
