NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Southcoast Health is laying off 70 workers at locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
In a statement, Southcoast Health said the cuts to staff will be taken from locations across southern New England. The hospital group says expenses have outpaced income and they expect a three percent shortfall in their 2015 budget.
“Southcoast is a strong, financially sound, growing organization. We continue to add new physicians, new services and new facilities across Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island,” said Peter Cohenno, spokesman for Southcoast Health.
“Laying the foundation for a stable long-term future requires that Southcoast, like most other health systems, identify responsible reductions in expenditures that will allow us to continue to operate an efficient and affordable system for years to come. In the most challenging decision of all, Southcoast is laying off 70 employees across our system, a reduction of approximately 1 percent of our 7,200 employee workforce.
“These decisions are not easy, but they are undertaken in recognition of our responsibility to continue to provide our region with clinical excellence, first-rate facilities and the latest technology available.”
Southcoast hospitals include Charlton Hospital in Fall River, Mass., and St. Luke Hospital in New Bedford, Mass.
